NEWS RELEASE

Board of Supervisors to hear community input on draft redistricting maps at special meeting Tuesday night

Newly released citizen voting age population data added to draft maps

Residents can provide in-person or virtual feedback on draft redistricting maps at a special meeting of the Riverside County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday (Oct. 19) at 6 p.m.

This week, the county updated draft maps with citizen voting age population (CVAP) information. The CVAP data was updated in a statewide database at the end of September. In addition, the county posted three additional draft maps with CVAP data for public review. CVAP data considers citizen voting ages of minority groups to comply with the Voting Rights Act.

“These updated maps continue to move the county forward in our redistricting efforts,” said Board Chair Karen Spiegel, second district supervisor. “This is a process that requires community feedback, inclusion of updated data and revised lines. All are welcome to draw draft boundaries and submit for review.”

Redistricting ensures fair and equal representation that accounts for changes in population and communities of interest that share common social and economic factors.

In addition to the inclusion of the CVAP data, the county will assess racially polarized voting patterns as an additional measure to further support compliance with the Voting Rights Act. The five-month delay in the release of data from the U.S. Census Bureau compressed the timeline for developing draft boundaries and seeking community input. Public participation throughout the redistricting process is critically important.

The public hearing will also be available live and on-demand at RivCoTV.org. Additional opportunities for public input will be held in November.
